capital improvements projects

Our beautiful city is constantly evolving with exciting new improvements for our community to enjoy. While no good deed is performed without help, often, many of our projects extend beyond the scope of Parks and Recreation alone. Our Capital Improvements Projects involve urban planning and the revitalization and preservation of city infrastructures.

COMING SOON

Hitzman-Optimist Park Athletic Fields

Coming soon to Hitzman-Optimist Park, the City of Pensacola is creating more space for our expanding youth soccer program! Through a land-swap agreement with the YMCA of Northwest Florida, the city has acquired the property adjacent to Hitzman-Optimist Park which was formerly the home of the Northeast Pensacola YMCA.  Site prep and demolition began in December 2019 on the old YMCA and construction is expected to conclude in late 2021.

New park features will include:

  • Three, full-size soccer fields, capable of accommodating multiple youth games.
  • Multi-use greenspace
  • Bathroom & Concession and equipment/storage buildings
  • Parking area with 110 additional spaces
  • Walking loop
  • Landscape berms and storm swales that will be planted with native vegetation
  • Unpaved, overflow parking area
  • Additionally, the City is addressing traffic on Langley Avenue with traffic calming measures.

So what will it look like when it's finished? Here's a concept drawing to get an idea of how the new area of the park will be laid out.

hollice t. williams stormwater park

The City of Pensacola and Escambia County have joined forces to transform Hollice T. Williams Park into an innovative and iconic urban greenspace. Community members were invited to give their input to help guide the parks transformation via survey and public meetings. The new park will be a space for all ages to enjoy activities in the heart of the city. Improvements coming to the park include a new skatepark, lighting, multi-use paths, public art, stormwater runoff reduction, water quality improvements and more! The park will reconnect the social fabric of the neighborhood displaced by the construction of I-110 in the 1970s.

View the interactive map below of the envisioned layout for the new Hollice T. Williams Park!

BAYVIEW COMMUNITY RESOURCE CENTER

Construction for the replacement of Bayview Community Resource Center was completed in February 2021. Bayview Community Resource Center is an exciting new addition to Bayview Park. The facility, which replaces the former community center that was demolished in 2015, provides more accessible uses and waterfront access for the community to enjoy. The building is designed to be an active and highly social building that also reinforces the importance of Bayou Texar as a natural asset and supports continued improvements of and around Bayou Texar. The building's main entrance pays homage to the old 30-foot diving tower that was used in the park dating back to the early 1920s.

The community center portion of the facility boasts staff offices, restrooms, and a large event space with a picturesque window overlooking Bayou Texar, which can be separated into two smaller event spaces. A large open lobby welcomes guests to the facility and there are multiple decks and balconies offering sweeping views of the waterfront. Accessible from the east entrance of the building, the Bayview Outdoor Pursuits Center offers short-term and extended outdoor and watersport equipment rentals to the community at affordable rates. Citizens may rent a kayak, stand-up paddleboard (SUP), bikes as well as other non-motorized water activities.

The Bayview Senior Center will remain in its current location adjacent to the new community center and will see relief from program crowding as well as improved access to parking.

Project Budget: $6.5 million

Contractor: Hewes and Company

Architects: Caldwell and Associates

BAYVIEW SENIOR CENTER RENOVATION

The Bayview Senior Center completed renovations in late 2019. The original renovations to the facility included new restrooms to meet Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) accessibility standards, new tile flooring, safety handrails and interior painting. After work commenced on the project, contractors uncovered hidden water damage and therefore, the project timeline and budget were amended to allow for the additional work.

The new and improved Bayview Senior Center was awarded the 2020 Florida Recreation and Park Association Facility Showcase Award. A publication on the public spaces and facilities showcase can be read in the 2020 FRPA Winter Journal
