John Jerralds was appointed on September 4, 2019 to fill the unexpired term of the District 5 City Council seat. John previously was appointed to the District 5 seat in July, 2000 and subsequently served 12 years as the District 5 City Council Member, two in which he served as Deputy Mayor.
John is a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School. He earned his Bachelor’s degree from St. Joseph’s College in Brooklyn, New York, where he majored in Health Care Administration with a minor in Education. He earned his Master’s in Educational Leadership from the University of West Florida.
John began his career in healthcare in 1967 as an Emergency Medical Technician, Healthcare Practitioner and obtained training in Cardio-Pulmonary EKG Tech/Respiratory Care. He worked at Baptist Hospital as a Supervisor 3-11 Respiratory Therapy, University Hospital as Department Manager Respiratory Care, EKG and Pulmonary Laboratory as lead Technologist and at Pensacola Junior College as a Health Education faculty member.
John was employed by Escambia County Schools and served as a Classroom Teacher, Placement Specialist and Assistant Principal at George Stone Technical Center. He retired from the Escambia County School system in 2009.
Currently, John serves as a community volunteer for NAACP, Movement for Change, Inc., Gulf Coast Minority Chamber of Commerce, President of Northeast Neighborhood Association, Coordinator of Dropout Prevention at the Woodland Heights Resource Center and mentors for Escambia students.
John and his wife Viola have been married for over 41 years and have two sons, and two grandsons.
