How the Program Works
During the holiday season, wreaths are displayed on fire stations throughout our community. One green bulb on the wreath will be replaced by a red bulb for every structure fire in the City of Pensacola, while a white bulb will represent a fallen firefighter.
Hints to Keep the Wreath Green & Your Home Safe
- Select only the freshest natural trees, and remember to keep it watered. Test a tree's freshness by pulling along a branch of the tree, if the needles fall into your hand, the tree is too dry.
- Keep trees and flammable materials, such as presents or gift wrapping paper, away from heat sources, including televisions and radios.
- Use only those artificial trees with safety approved tags and are flame retardant.
- Inspect all holiday lights, and use lights that have been approved by a testing laboratory.
- Discard any light strings having frayed cords, bare wires, and loose connections or sockets.
- Avoid overloading circuits or extension cords.
- Check instructions with light strings to determine the maximum number you may place in one outlet.
- Before going to bed or leaving the house, turn off all lights.
- Do not leave candles unattended. Before leaving, extinguish all candles.
- Keep candles a safe distance from other things, and remember that a flickering flame is a fascination to little children. Keep candles out of their reach.
- Never use lighted candles on a tree or near other evergreens.
- Always use non-flammable candle holders.
- Keep candles away from other decorations and wrapping paper.
- Place candles where they cannot be knocked down or blown over.
