PFD Investigation Determines Discarded Cigarette Caused Armstrong Park Playground Fire
Red Flag Warning in Effect for Escambia County;
Public Reminded to Always Properly Dispose of Cigarettes
Pensacola Fire Department would like to remind the public to always properly dispose of cigarettes, after an investigation determined that a playground fire today at Armstrong Park was caused by a smoldering cigarette left on the ground.
Pensacola and Escambia County are also under a Red Flag Warning
today from the National Weather Service, with a combination of high winds and low humidity creating conditions for fires to spread rapidly.
PFD received a call at approximately 8:50 this morning, Tuesday, Oct. 18, for a playground fire at Armstrong Park, located at 300 W. Lakeview Ave. Engine 1 crews arrived on scene to find playground equipment burning, and quickly extinguished the fire. No one was injured in the fire, but the playground equipment was significantly damaged.
PFD's Fire Prevention Bureau conducted an investigation and determined that the fire was accidentally started by a smoldering cigarette that was improperly discarded. Due to the current red flag fire conditions, even properly discarded cigarettes can start a fire. The public is urged to follow these safety tips when discarding cigarettes:
- Put cigarettes out all the way, every time.
- Don’t walk away from lit cigarettes and other smoking materials.
- Put water on the ashes and butts to make sure they are really out before you put them in the trash.
- Put your cigarette out in an ashtray or bucket with sand. Use ashtrays with a wide base so they won’t tip over and start a fire.
Residents are encouraged to refrain from outdoor burning during the Red Flag Warning. For residents in City of Pensacola limits, open burning is not allowed per city ordinance, regardless of weather conditions or county and state burn bans. For more information, please review the city’s outdoor fire ordinance.
Armstrong Park remains open to the public, but the damaged playground is closed until further notice.
