Street Resurfacing and Natural Gas Improvements

Work will continue this week on the City’s $30-million street resurfacing and natural gas distribution system improvements program.

Street resurfacing crews will be working throughout the eastern portion of the city to adjust manhole covers and valves; repair damaged concrete curbs, sidewalks, and gutters; and, apply pavement markings. Natural gas distribution work will find crews boring to place new gas main in southern portions of the city.

Benefits of the street resurfacing work include:

  • Safer, smoother riding streets and roadways.
  • Better drainage.
  • Reduced need for vehicle repairs.
  • Improved fuel efficiency.
  • Aesthetic improvements for neighborhoods and commercial districts.
Replacing the antiquated cast-iron gas main with modern, medium-density polyethylene piping will provide Pensacola Energy customers with:
  • Enhanced safety and operational efficiency of the natural gas distribution system.
  • Improved reliability and fewer maintenance costs.
  • Increased capacity to accommodate modern natural gas appliances such as whole-house generators, tankless water heaters, and large pool and spa heaters.

Construction activities will occur primarily off the roadway this week with few impacts to traffic.

The two-year, citywide program is milling and resurfacing approximately 1,800 blocks (119-miles) of streets and roadways. In addition, Pensacola Energy is replacing more than 75-miles of obsolete cast-iron gas main with modern and efficient medium-density polyethylene piping.

All planned construction activities are weather-dependent. Work may be postponed, delayed, or re-scheduled in the event of rain, cold, windy or other inclement conditions.

More information on the street resurfacing program is available by calling the city’s information line, (850) 380-9188. Questions about the natural gas distribution system upgrades should be referred to Pensacola Energy, (850) 474-5300.
