City Wins National Recreation and Park Association's Video Contest

 
The National Recreation and Park Association announced Monday morning that the City of Pensacola's Parks and Recreation Department is the weekly winner of the Park Rec Two Step Challenge. The contest is part of National Park and Recreation Month, which is celebrated in July.

To enter, participants were asked to watch SaulPaul's official training video to get familiar with the dance moves and then create a music video at a local park or recreation area.  

Participants of the City of Pensacola's entry included the musical theater class, Ageless Grace class and summer campers at Gull Point Resource Center, summer campers at Fricker Resource Center and Friday Pickers at Sanders Beach-Corinne Jones Resource Center. The entry was submitted on Friday, July 26.

Mayor's Neighborhood Cleanup Collects Over 41 Tons of Bulk Waste


The latest Mayor's Neighborhood Cleanup collected over 41 tons (82,240 pounds) of bulk waste, along with 127 tires and 514 gallons of paint. The cleanup took place on Saturday, July 27 and included over 2,000 houses in the cleanup area. 

The Mayor's Neighborhood Cleanup allows residents in the cleanup areas to leave eligible items at the curb on cleanup day to be picked up by City of Pensacola Sanitation Services. The cleanup includes bulk items such as household appliances, furniture and mattresses, bicycles and toys, tires and old paint.

Pensacola Fire Department Receives Fire Prevention Grant


Pensacola Fire Department has received a $2,500 fire prevention grant from FM Global, which will be used to assist with fire prevention activities in the community to help educate the public and reduce the number of fires.

Pensacola Fire Department will use the grant to pay for smoke alarms to be distributed through the free smoke alarm program, educational pamphlets and a Sparky the Fire Dog costume for children's education and outreach.

"We are excited to use this money to further our community outreach programs and continue to educate the public about how they can prevent fires in their homes and businesses," Fire Marshal Annie Bloxson said. "We thank FM Global for their support of our fire prevention efforts, which we hope will save lives in our community."

FM Global representatives presented the award to Pensacola Fire Department on Friday, July 26. Because fire continues to be the leading cause of property damage worldwide, during the past 40 years FM Global has contributed millions of dollars in fire prevention grants to fire service organizations around the globe. Locally, the company has awarded grants to a number of Florida-based organizations.

Join Your Neighbors for National Night Out Aug. 6


On Tuesday, Aug. 6, neighborhoods throughout Pensacola are being invited to join forces with thousands of communities nationwide for the Annual National Night Out crime and drug prevention event.

This free event will run from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Legion Field, 1301 W. Gregory St. CDAC Behavioral Healthcare, Pensacola Police Department, Escambia County Sheriff’s Office, and many community organization would like to encourage residents to come and join this family event. 

National Night Out is a great way for family, friends, and neighbors to stand together to promote healthy life styles and safer neighborhoods.  We will have school supplies for the kids while supplies last.  




Fall Youth Sports Sign-Ups are Underway


Summer is almost over, and that means it's time to be sure your child is registered for fall youth sports.

Registration is open now through Aug. 17 for Bill Bond Baseball league. Practices will begin around the end of the month, and all games and clinics will end by Oct. 23.

Players and coaches can sign up online. 

Also, registration is ending soon for Pensacola Youth Soccer's fall season. The good news is that it's easier now more than ever to register for soccer.

Pensacola Youth soccer can now take your registration payment and information online, as well as take payment if you need a new uniform. The league is open to boys and girls age 4-15.

But hurry – registration ends Monday, Aug. 5.
